Thanks, that was helpful. I translated the material samples thing in a couple minutes using babelfish..
Material Sample Collector:
Research:
For further research we will often need better samples of different materials. However, our scientists can not go in combat zones and develop their mobile laboratories.
We should therefore look for a different possibility, how our soldiers themselves can procure samples on combat conditions.
UFOPedia:
This sample collecting equipment has just been developed as a weapon and can be used in such a way. It is however necessary that the purpose be programmed before each use.
The soldier directs the equipment toward the target, out of which the sample is to be taken, releases the safety (SHIFT) and fires.
Thereupon a Material Sample Probe with a sharp opening is shot on the target area and, immediately caught by a push/pull cable with the separated sample.
The computer in the equipment compares some base data of the sample and says whether the sample is usable or another one must be collected.
Since we must account for losses in the fight, all usable samples are sealed immediately in their container and a helium Balloon attached to the container is blown up, which carries the sample. This sample is collected automatically by our planes outside of the save area of the UFOs.
Looks usable now. It's a quick translation, but seems to make sense to me.. Mostly anyway.
Floor Sample Capsules:
Research:
Capsules for the sample collecting equipment
UFOPedia:
These capsules for material collection are built to take ground samples.
The equipment that uses these capsules works best by firing a capsule on the ground about a meter from your feet. DirkF: Beitrag abgesplittet von hier |

I'm not sure of where all the untranslated texts are, but I found another, here is the translation...
Salerian EMP-Effect:
Research:
First observations showed no effect of the EMP on the Salerian crystallites. With these strange things however sometimes no information is also helpful.
The data for a more exact analysis is ready.
UFOPedia:
The EMP actually has no effect on Salerian crystallites.
Thus it is certain, however, that this Construct does not work on an electrical basis at least.
They are not biological however, and so far we only know either biological or electronic units.
We must search further for reference points, in order to understand this technology - otherwise we will never find the weak points. DirkF: Beitrag verschoben von hier |

Triliir EMP-Effect:
Research:
First observations showed nothing special with the hit of the EMP cannon on a Triliir remote.
The data for a more exact analysis is ready.
UFOPedia:
The remote controlled Triliir remote robots are electrical and as such are expected affected by the EMP.
According to all data it concerns a 100% normal failure without special effects.
However an abrupt rise of the radio signals occurred with respect to the Triliir wreck, when the robots failed. Apparently such EMP-Effects lies completely outside of the empirical values of the Triliir control computers - one could almost assume that the control computers panicked, when they had lost the contact to their mobile units. Wild Bear:
Research:
This body is probably a normal bear, which lived only coincidentally, in the proximity of the crash site.
An investigation should take place for security nevertheless.
UFOPedia:
Naja, which one is to examine here? That is stop a savage bear, that had chosen a place to live in proximity of a crash site.
The cadaver was passed on to the kitchen, the soldiers already look forward to the alteration of the food plan.
Babelfish couldn't translate Naja, so I have no idea what it means. The first sentence isn't well translated as a result. DirkF: Beitrag verschoben von hier |

Alien-Basis:
Name: Alien Base
Description:
Here is one of the entrances for the base of the extraterrestials.
One of the local reports and first sensor measurements show which entrance is not defended by extraterrestials with heavy equipment - we probably have weapons, which can add Verwundungen to these opponents.
Objective:
Flee immediately.
Currently we cannot do anything against the base.
Sensor Text:
The entrance lies a short distance from the landing point.
According to radar measurements, three or four heavily armored units are in a chamber before the entrance.
Verwundungen couldn't be translated. I have no idea what that is. DirkF: Beitrag verschoben von hier |

Xeltaan Wald:
Name: Xeltaan Forest
Description:
The UFO %s has crashed in this area. Civilian emergency messages indicate that the aliens have spread out and attack everything that moves.
Objectives:
Calm the survivors and guarantee you all found equipment.
Try to minimize collateral damage.
Secure the environment for our salvage troops.
They must be able to work unimpaired.
Sensor Text:
The UFO crashed in a forest area. This is a more or less unexplored area. DirkF: Beitrag verschoben von hier |

I moved these translations to a new discussion as they didn't have anything to do with the original theme of the old discussion.
If you wish to help with translations, it would be far better if you use the language files - those are intended to be used for translations, and they can be re-imported into the gameset.

Zitat: Criusmac is not defended by extraterrestials with heavy equipment - we probably have weapons, which
Wrong sentence logic.
correct translation would be
is defended by extraterrestials with heavy equipment - we probably have no weapons that can harm them...
automatic translators usually do a very poor job as you can see by this placement of the negation to the wrong place, creating exactly the opposite impression to what really is written in German... |

Yup, I suspected what the meaning was since the objective was flee immediately, but since I didn't know what that word was, I couldn't translate it the proper way. >.<
An automatic translator is the best I can do since I don't know a word of German.. Except Actung or something I saw in some old war movie. And danke, or something. Well, anyway, not a word. XD
But aye, automatic translators are pretty bad, although since German and English are so similar, I felt it would do a decent enough job I could understand it, and fix the rest.
Also, I did do all these translation in the gameset editor. I just didn't know how to submit that, so I copied and pasted all the text from the gameset editor to the forum as I translated it.
As requested, I have created the account. I don't know what to do with it, but you'll probably know. Since you mentioned earlier you didn't want help with translating this until the next version, should I just hold off on this?
I have updated the alien base mission description per your translation, and I can easily submit the updated gameset files, if I only knew how to export them.
What's Naja? |

don't.
It is much easier to do in a text editor after exporting them
Zitat: Criusmac if I only knew how to export them
Open the editor, click on file - languages...
The rest should be self-explaining... |

The sentence "Naja, was soll man hier untersuchen?"
means "Well, what should we analyze here?" |

Not to offend you, but...
you better leave the translation to people who have at least a decent word pool and grammar knowledge. Automated translations are the _worst_ translations possible. And, as you could see, they are likely to deform the meaning.
Zitat: Criusmac since German and English are so similar
I don't think so. A bunch of similar words, but also many "false friends" - what would you expect "chef" to mean in german? (it means boss).
And grammar works different in many cases - just to name the word order. |

Ok, sure. I can stop my attempts at translating.
The babelfish does translate chef to boss, but I might have picked 'chief' instead, which is leiter.
I felt at worst I'd be wasting my own time, and at best I'd be helping out. If there are translators who have at least a decent word pool and grammar knowledge, then they are the ones who should be translating. I agree. If there aren't any translators who can put in the time, then maybe I would have been better than nothing. It is tough to say though, enough mistakes in translating, and perhaps nothing is better. |

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to forbid you to translate it. Just don't expect it to be equal to the work of a real translator.
Zitat: Criusmac I felt at worst I'd be wasting my own time, and at best I'd be helping out.
I guess that's right ;-)

and leiter can also mean ladder...
and so on... that's what I was talking about ^^ |

We have such translators, but they prefer to work with larger blocks in textfiles as its very time consuming to copy&past single objects in the editor itself.
And I won't prepare those blocks unless there are many new objects in need for translation - it simply is too much work to translate everything in single text parts... |

I'm not really sure of what you are trying to say to me Sujin. Your advice seems to say I shouldn't bother trying to translate since my work will not be good enough. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to take this.
While I'm sure my work won't match that of someone who actually knows both languages... Yes, there really isn't much I can respond to. You are simply stating obvious things for some reason I am not understanding... |

Zitat: sujin The reason is that I've met too many people who miss the most obvious things...
Yup. ^^ I do miss obvious things too, as I'm sure a lot of people do. It makes life fun though, right? Not knowing our limits, not knowing what's around us, and trying new things.
I believe fully that while my translations will be poorer than others could do, that they will be better than English only people staring at a screen full of German text, which is how I found some parts of the gamesets I tried. It may not be true, especially if I lead them to believe this particular base entrance is not heavily armored, but I'll just chalk that up to giving them hope for the future.
I still remember my first game, where I lost my entire squad by sending them to a level 2 radiation area in Galactic War, because I couldn't understand the description any. These horrid realities are what I hope to help prevent. :) Our soldiers need us!
Yes, I realize it's a game by the way. :) |
